State police were called to a report of animal cruelty in the 2300 block of Baltimore Pike in Mount Joy Township just before 3 p.m. on Apr. 25, according to the release.
Neighbors explained an incident that had happened around 8 a.m. two days prior to the police. A 43-year-old woman had violated state law by not leashing her two black dogs and letting them run free. Then her neighbor, the farmer, knows there are black coyotes in the area so he opened fire on the animals.
The farmer supposedly tried to find the animals he shot, but he told police he could not locate them.
When the animals returned home they were wounded and required emergency medical care, as shown in the release.
The status and condition of the dogs was not released.
The woman was not cited for the leash violation but the farmer's information was shared with the state game commission for possible violations, police say.
